Introduction to Basketmaking: One Day Workshop

If you are not sure whether weaving with willow or basketmaking is for you, this one-day workshop will introduce you to a variety of easy projects and techniques. You will make a simple wreath from a handful of rods of willow; then you will move on to creating a decorative fish using basic weaving techniques. In the afternoon you will make a very simple woven pot designed to hold a supermarket herb plant - a much prettier container for your windowsill than a plastic pot!

Description

Creating a simple wreath may look extremely easy but achieving a smooth round shape with no kinks in the willow is trickier than first thought!  Don't worry, you'll soon get the hang of it though!.  The decorative fish provides an opportunity to learn how to control the weaving rod when making a tight turn, keeping the shape of the fish in check, and finally tying the tail ends together, resulting in a delightful wall decoration or table platter.  If you are quick you may make more than one fish.  Finally, the herb pot planter involves learning an essential basketry weave, the 3-rod wale, and also finishing off with a simple 'trac' border.  You will make one of these during the afternoon.

The price of this workshop includes all materials, use of tools and refreshments

This workshop is suitable for absolute beginners, but please bear in mind that a certain amount of manual strength and dexterity is required when working with willow.  All projects covered on my workshops have been selected for their relative simplicity and suitability for beginners.  Throughout the workshop participants may need to use specialist basketry tools (provided), many of which are either sharp or pointed, so a sensible approach to personal safety is essential!

A work apron is recommended.

Maximum class size is 10 at this venue.

Refreshments are provided - please bring a packed lunch – there is no shop in the village.
